There is no better time to start a blog than when you’re convalescing in bed with the flu. So 2018, you started off with a bang! I get the flu; my readers get a blog. Win, win.
In this #momdowntimenotbychoice, I was able to binge on YouTube’s how to’s and what not. And from there, I started two new 2018 goals. I won’t spoil the fun just yet so you’re gonna have to come back.
As I finally started to feel better today on Day 6, my middle baby Chris (yes, he’s 11 but still my baby), told me he wasn’t feel well. I felt so guilty I got him sick but he assured me it was because everyone at school was sick including his teachers.
Tsk tsk. If there is one pet peeve I hate, it is going to work sick! Ok, I get it – maybe you don’t get sick leave and you need to work to eat. But I hope people think before they cough on you.
I’m a nurse on the blood cancer and bone marrow transplant unit and no way can we go to work albeit even a sniffle. My patients have wiped out their immune systems via chemotherapy in an effort to eradicate the cancer. They are the Bubble Boy without an immune system for quite some time. A cold for us is nothing; to them it is literally life or death. So, here I am – negative sick leave balance later making sure I better be safe than sorry.
Speaking of transplants, my Chris is a liver transplant recipient which he received when he was a baby. He celebrated 10 years in October and it was a big party for him. I promise to share his story later. Chris’ immune system isn’t as compromised as my patients but weakened nonetheless by the medication he has to take to prevent organ rejection. When he gets sick, I worry a tad bit more because it is a fine line between him and the hospital.
But if you know kids, they are resilient! And Chris is the strongest kid I know! A flu for me in 6 days will probably be him in 3 days.
So, putting my mom hat and nurse hat on simultaneously today. There is no rest for the weary.
P.S. Shout out to my hubby and my tagteam partner for picking up the slack when #momdowntimenotbychoice went down!
